Stephen and Kumiko Duxfield







Stephen and Kumiko have both lived in the Auckland region for over 20 years, and have a true appreciation for the ‘City of Sails’. Stephen is originally from Wanganui, a small west coast city, and Kumiko moved from Kobe, Japan to Auckland. They have developed a range of interests including watching movies, reading, bush and beach walking, gardening, cooking, walking their dog, Adelie and participation in a range of sports.

Both Stephen and Kumiko are recognised leaders in the New Zealand Japanese community for roles they have undertaken over a number of years. Involvement in cultural, educational, sporting and social events for the broader Japanese community. In 2016 Stephen was one of only 90 foreigners worldwide awarded by the Japanese Government thus receiving the 'Order of the Rising Sun, Gold & Silver Rays'. Kumiko was awarded an Honorary New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the 2018 Queens Birthday honours. 


Kumiko promotes various aspects of Japanese culture having founded a softball team, a taiko drum troupe and she is the main driver behind the biennial 'Taste of Japan' cultural festival in Auckland. She currently practises the Japanese Tea ceremony. Stephen has various interests and is well-known for his love of sports, in particular long distance running. He has completed several marathons and many other distance running events.
