The Long Run

December 4, 2017

How do we look at life? I admire qualities such as endurance and perseverance so for me life is more likened to a marathon than a sprint. I guess some of that thinking comes from the fact that from a young age I achieved successes more at the longer distances. The marathon still holds an appeal for me and, although I think my days of running at sub 4 minute kilometres are coming to an end, I still maintain my regular weekly routine which includes a weekend long run to maintain stamina and strength.

When in Auckland on a Sunday morning there is nothing better than a 'pack run' in Cornwall Park with a few mates and good dose of 'banter'. Gathering 'like Brown's cows' somewhere along Twin Oaks Drive or Puriri Drive solo runners (mostly guys) meet and fall into the running rhythm of the pack. It is special as we run at around 5 minute km pace for as long as each intends. For most it is considered to be a two hour run but we all have our own start and finish point dependent upon current goals and fitness levels.

Living where I am about 70km north of Auckland on the Mahurangi Peninsula, the long weekend run is mostly a solo effort at slower than usual pace with the occasional stop to 'enjoy the views'.  The picture above is of Algies Bay with a cluster of boats at anchor looking across toward Sandpit. If you're a runner too, I'll see you out there!
